BBNY is a brainstorming website using data from NYC Open Data. Its purpose is to provide a minimalist space dedicated solely to name generation. Adding physics-simulated fidget tools to help users concentrate. It serves as both a visual stimulation and a practical indicator of how common a name is.

The hue of the physics balls will dynamically change as the commonality increases from green to blue to red. It also has a randomized button to pick from the database when users are out of ideas. Simple yet straightforward. Free from distractions.

The Process

I loved the shenanigans websites that don't really serve a big purpose except for having fun. I used to pass my time in class messing with these kinds of websites. So I wanted to make one myself and make it entertaining. I picked a name searcher because asking how common a name is is the simplest way to tease one's curiosity.

I started with a few visual directions, making it fancy and cool. But looking more at children's websites, I decided to keep the color vibrant and bright. I felt I did too much with the shape I used to visualize numbers, so I dialed back the complexity and kept it simple with circles. Finally, after building out my vision, I had to learn how to make it a reality—by planning my study timeline and setting weekly goals. Seeing this website come to life felt satisfying, even if it was just for shenanigans.
